5 Years

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

It’s been ages since I’ve posted anything, but I figured a post celebrating the fifth anniversary of One Sentence was as good a comeback post as any!

Sure, my original One Sentence post will actually turn ten next year, but this site officially launched five years ago today, when I announced it on Mefi Projects, exactly three months after registering the domain, less than a month after Twitter’s official launch, and barely a month before the birth of my daughter.

It’s been a fun five years, with over 100,000 submissions coming through (a mere 4% of which have actually been accepted for the site). I’ve got some interesting stuff lined up that hopefully I’ll be able to write about soon.

Thanks for being a One Sentence reader/contributor. Thanks for sticking around, submitting great stories, and just generally being an awesome group of people.

I had to laugh when this sentence was submitted today:

I made a site for people to make me rich by submitting one sentence stories for me to publish in a book without sharing any of the revenue.

Just to set it straight for anyone who may be thinking the same thing: it’s been almost three years and there’s no book yet. There may be someday, but there’s not right now. And, trust me, ain’t no one getting rich here.

Plus, if you don’t like the idea of your sentence possibly someday winding up in a book that may be sold: you can either a.) submit your sentence and e-mail me to let me know you don’t want it in a book (as the terms and conditions state) or b.) not submit your sentence here. Those both sound pretty reasonable to me.

Radio New Zealand

Friday, April 10th, 2009

This morning on the other side of the world, I was interviewed on Radio New Zealand’s Good Friday show. I had a good time and hopefully didn’t ramble too much (I’m fully aware of the irony of “rambling” about a site stressing brevity). Below is the audio:

Oh, and check out story #3000!

One Sentence just won its first bloggie in the new category of “Best Microblog”!

Thanks to everyone who voted and, of course, to all of you who contribute such great content to the site and make it what it is!

My Giraffe Rag In One Hand

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Sometimes submissions come in that I just need to share, even if I explicitly disapprove them.  The other day I got a submission that failed on two levels.  First, it was written in Spanish.  I have no problems with Spanish, of course, but given that all of the stories here are in English, a Spanish submission would be better suited for a site that is run by, say, someone who knows the language.

Secondly, the story had multiple sentences.  One of the several day that I get like that.

Yet, something compelled me to run the submission through Google Translate.  And that, friends, is what I want to share with you:

When I was 6 years, my father drove me home to put my boots on your fish tank water. With teary eyes waited 5 minutes in front of the door with my giraffe rag in one hand and a picture of my mother and giraffe in the other. I never even went to watch their fish, until yesterday, smoking reefer in the living room carpet was on fire …

Now I kinda’ wish I had approved it…

1S: 2009 Bloggie Finalist (Vote now!)

Monday, January 26th, 2009

This is pretty cool: One Sentence is a finalist for a 2009 Bloggie in the new “Best Microblog” category!

Thanks to whoever pushed us through the nomination process… this all came as a very pleasant surprise.  One Sentence is definitely in some good company.

I suppose this means I should stump for some votes, then, huh?  So, should you feel One Sentence is deserving, go here and vote (the page scrolls horizontally).  Voting closes on February 2nd at 10pm EST.

For sale: one brain, never used.

To all the folks that have ever submitted Hemingway’s famous six-word, single sentence story as their own: did you really think I wouldn’t notice? Or that a dozen people before you hadn’t done the same thing?

Performance Improvements

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The stories page has always been kind of slow because it stupidly created the tag cloud on every page load.  Last night I whipped up a little caching code and it now only creates the cloud once every hour.  It’s much, much snappier now.

Also, since the cloud was growing a bit unwieldy, it’s only displaying tags that have two or more entries associated with them.

(I haven’t moved the site to the new server yet… time got away from me this weekend.  Soon.)

Downtime and moving

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Apologies for the multiple instances of downtime this week. I’m finally going to move 1S to a new host this weekend. So, there will be a short time this weekend where the site is once again unavailable, but rest assured that once things are back up and running, the downtime issues should disappear.

Back to the lab

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Hey there!

I’m back after a few (very needed) days off and away from the Net. New sentences resume today.
